Living with multiple sclerosis can be a difficult journey. MS flare ups, while unpredictable, can be managed with some self-care. Here are 3 things you can do to help manage an MS flare up and keep your spirits high!

1. Get Plenty of Rest – Many people who live with MS experience fatigue and increased symptoms during an MS flare up. One of the best things you can do is get plenty of rest. Turn off your phone and other screens, grab a book or journal, and focus on getting the rest that your body needs.

2. Stay Hydrated – Staying hydrated is essential for managing any chronic illness but especially during an MS flare up as dehydration can lead to additional symptoms such as muscle cramps, headaches, and dizziness. Make sure you have plenty of water nearby throughout the day and aim for at least 8 glasses per day.

3. Reach Out for Support – Don’t forget about your support system! Reach out to friends or family when you’re having a flare up and let them know how they can help you rather than trying to manage it alone. There may be days where all you need is someone to talk to or even just a hug—and there’s nothing wrong with asking for it!

MS flare ups come with a lot of uncertainty, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t steps we can take to manage them better! Getting plenty of rest, staying hydrated, and reaching out for the support we need are just three simple ways we can take care of ourselves during an MS flare up. Remember that self-care is essential for managing our health long term so make sure you prioritize yourself today!
